Driving Green Transition in South Baltic Ports: Insights and Strategies for Sustainability
The DigiTechPort2030 project focuses on decarbonizing small and medium-sized ports in the South Baltic Area by developing two key solutions: a Green Energy Harmonization Toolbox and an EU Regulation and Green Policy Compliance Roadmap. Led by Hochschule Wismar, the project involves analyzing the green energy transition in ports across Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, and Germany. Many ports have long-term strategies, with Sweden showing strong adoption, often focusing on energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. However, challenges like high costs and lack of knowledge slow progress, and cooperation with authorities varies widely, with Sweden leading and Poland lagging.
The project also introduces a Green Transformation Compass methodology to assess ports on strategy, management, infrastructure, equipment, and external services. This tool helps ports evaluate their environmental impact and calculate emissions, offering a pathway to greener operations. Activities include preparing reports, testing decarbonization pilots, and sharing knowledge with port authorities, logistics companies, academia, and the public. By the project’s end, these efforts aim to empower ports to meet EU green goals, fostering a sustainable South Baltic ecosystem
