From Connect2SmallPorts to DigiTechPort2030

Connect2SmallPorts, implemented between 2018 and 2022 under the Interreg South Baltic Programme and co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund, laid the foundation for the digital transformation of small and medium-sized ports in the South Baltic region. The project was led by Hochschule Wismar (Germany) in cooperation with partners from Lithuania, Poland, Sweden, and Germany, bringing together maritime organisations, research institutions, and port authorities to strengthen digital capacity across borders.

Its main goal was to reduce the digitalisation gap between small and large ports by developing practical tools, building knowledge, and promoting collaboration. The project introduced a Digital Auditing and Benchmarking System to assess ports’ digital readiness and identify areas for improvement. Several pilot projects tested smart technologies such as IoT-based monitoring systems, blockchain solutions, and digital logistics applications, demonstrating how innovation can enhance efficiency and sustainability in everyday port operations.

Beyond technology, Connect2SmallPorts placed strong emphasis on people. Through workshops, online courses, and capacity-building activities, it helped port professionals gain new skills and confidence in using digital tools. This focus on human competence and cooperation created a vibrant community of practice that continues to shape port innovation today.

By its conclusion in mid-2022, Connect2SmallPorts had delivered a valuable legacy — a combination of digital tools, training materials, and policy recommendations that strengthened the digital maturity of regional ports. DigiTechPort2030 proudly builds on this foundation, continuing the mission by expanding digital innovation toward greener, smarter, and more sustainable port ecosystems across the South Baltic region.
